NICAS Level 4 Prep – Preparing to Lead

This preparatory course is designed for climbers who have completed NICAS Level 3 and are ready to progress towards lead climbing. The focus is on strengthening technical skill, refining movement, and consolidating the solid foundations built throughout Levels 1–3. Climbers will work on confidence, control, and decision‑making — all essential before moving into the more advanced discipline of lead climbing.

Course Focus

This programme supports climbers in:

Developing advanced technical skills

Embedding safe and efficient climbing habits

Improving movement, pacing, and route awareness

Building the confidence required to transition into lead climbing

Entry Requirements

Students must have:

Successfully passed NICAS Level 3, or

Demonstrated equivalent competence to an instructor prior to enrolment

They must already be able to:

Belay to a high standard with multiple belay devises and dependable catch a falling climber.

Climb graded routes with consistent technique and pacing (6a or above)

Tie in and fit a harness without instruction

Demonstrate excellent climbing‑centre safe practice

Important: NIBAS or NICAS Bouldering levels do not transfer to NICAS Climbing. The skill sets are different and must be assessed separately.

Additional Safety Requirement – Lead Climbing Acknowledgement of Risk

As students begin preparing for lead climbing, parents/guardians will be required to sign an additional Acknowledgement of Risk specific to lead climbing. Lead climbing involves a higher level of responsibility and carries different risks compared to top‑roping, so this form ensures that parents understand the nature of the activity and the safety measures in place.

This acknowledgement must be completed before a young person can participate in any lead‑climbing preparation or progression activities.
